Ruth Bader Ginsburg

Ruth Bader Ginsburg (1933-2020), the second woman—and first Jewish woman—to serve on the U.S. Supreme Court.

She was an outspoken advocate for equal rights and justice throughout her career, known especially for her precedent-setting work on women’s rights. Following her ‘fiery dissent’ around the rolling back of the Voting Rights Act, she began to be referred to with the edgy moniker RBG by which she has been fondly referred to in pop culture circles ever since since, a reference to the late rapper, also from Brooklyn, the Notorious B.I.G.</p> <p>She spoke of the Jewish value of justice as one of her driving goals as a jurist, and had the quote “Justice, Justice, You Shall Pursue” from Deuteronomy hanging in her chambers.</p> <p>Here are some resources you may find helpful in teaching about the famous Jewish American Supreme Court Justice and the impact she made on broader American society.</p> <h3><strong>Read/Listen</strong></h3> <p>Much has been written about RBG. Brandeis — the first Jewish justice on the Supreme Court</strong></p> <p>Justice Ginsburg narrates this 2 minute film on the first Jewish Justice (Justice Ginsburg was the second) on the U.S. Supreme Court, Louis D. Brandeis, who faced antisemitism even after his appointment the Court. He wrote landmark decisions on free speech and the right to privacy.
